Nigerian artist wins MOBO award

The ‘Best African Act’ at this year’s Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards went to a  R&B artist of Nigeria, Abolore Akande popularly known as 9ice. The coveted award ceremony is held annually in the United Kingdom to recognize artists of all race and nationality performing the music of black origin.9ice music are mostly blends of R&B and Afro-hip hop mixed with the local Yoruba language. He said: “My aim in all ways is to become a reference point for Nigerian artist anywhere.”Kanya King, founder of a former dancer award established the MOBO award in 1995. It is one of the world’s prestigious awards which assemble world superstars. Other previous Nigerian winners include 2face Idibia who recently sang a duet with popular American singer Robert Kelly.This year’s winners include American hip hop rapper Lil Wayne whose album ‘The Carter 111” sold 2,550,507 copies a record breaking and newcomer Chris Brown.

Ghana’s president to sue opposition party

President John Kufuor of Ghana has issued a 14-day ultimatum to leaders of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and persons said to be circulating information that he has been involved in a botched multi-million dollar oil deal to retract and apologise or prepare to meet him in court.The Presidential Spokesperson, Andrew Awuni, described the allegation as ‘wicked liars’ and a figment of the imagination of his accusers, but he wants them to retract and apologize to him or meet him in court to prove their case.

Somalia: Fresh attacks on AU forces

Heavy clashes involving AU peacekeeping force in Somalia and insurgents has led to the death of about 15 people and over 40 others wounded. The deaths include government armed forces and some of the insurgents.The incident follows the death of eight civilians when artillery weapons hit different villages in the capital especially the Hodan district. “I see five bodies lying in one place at the Bakara Market, where a mortar shell hit their house,” said Nasir Xashi, one of the local people. Four others including two children died in the Hodan district after traverse mortar smacked their house.
