A group of young Sierra Leonean professionals in the UK honoured former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, with an ‘Icon award’ for his remarkable contribution in bringing peace to their country. They commended him for his role in bringing world attention to their country during the civil war.The group founder, Abubakarr Messeh Kamara urged Blair to do more to accelerate development in Sierra Leone. “It is still not enough! Now we want a u-turn; our country must move from being a donor-driven nation to that of a fully independent state, empowered and capable of running it own affairs,” he appealed.
Speaking after receiving the award at his 9 Grosvenor Square, office in London, Blair promised to dispatch his staff to assist the Sierra Leone Government with technical and capacity building abilities. He thanked the group for the honor and promised to serve as a goodwill ambassador not only for the Government but for the country’s young population.

Countries in Africa and all over the world are marking the first ever Global Hand washing Day, in an effort to mobilize and motivate millions around the world to wash their hands with soap. The UN declared 2008 International Year of Sanitation. It reinforces the call for improved sanitation and hygiene practices.Hand washing with soap is one of the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent diarrheal disease and pneumonia, which together are responsible for approximately 3.5 million child deaths every year.

The Confederation of Africa Football has unveiled the shortlists for the Glo-CAF Awards 2008. CAF Director of Communications, Sulemana Habuba also announced innovations in the event with the aim of making it prestigious. The Media and Technical Committees nominated the shortlists for the two awards.The innovation Habuba said had led to the creation of the Glo-CAF Best Player on the Continent and the Glo-CAF Best Player across the World, according to cafonline.
